Our peace and prosperity depends on it
Whether elected or appointed, political leaders and their administration have the authority to direct their nation’s fate. This is tremendous power that can impact our lives and that of future generations in great or grave ways. But they are not the only ones with this great power.
The Christian believer also have great power to influence the state of nations. Paul writes in 1Timothy 2:2 that we should make petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving for all those in authority so that “we may lead peaceful and godly lives.”
Jeremiah 29:17 also urges “pray for the prosperity of where you live, for if it prospers you too will prosper.”
As God’s ambassadors in the earth, ordinary Christians have access to supernatural power and authority—through Jesus Christ—to establish the will of the Lord over geographical territories.
You don’t need to be a priest, bishop or titled religious leader to influence the decisions of those in authority. You don’t even have to meet with them. From your car, bedroom, classroom, office or garage, you can appeal to the sovereign ruler of all humanity—Jehovah—on behalf of your leaders.
For the heart of the king [leader] is in the hand of the Lord and like a river he turns it where he wills. (Proverbs 21:1)
Yet, God in his providence, does nothing in the earth except through his servants. That’s everyone and anyone who believes in the son of God—Jesus Christ—and accepts him as their Lord and Saviour. So effect your power by faith through prayer.
For the effectual fervent prayer of the righteous man avails much. (James 5:16).
You may tire of hearing 2 Chronicles 7:14 quoted, but it’s truth remains relevant for our peace and prosperity. “If my people who are called by name, would humble themselves and pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, I will forgive their sins and heal their land.”
If you are not pleased with the direction of your city or nation, don’t persecute your leaders or postulate what they should and should not do. Instead do this. Pray for the will of God to be established in and through them. Pray that they will have submissive hearts unto God; that they seek, find and uphold Godly counsel; that they resist perversion, bribes and selfish pursuits; that they fear the Lord; grow in Godly wisdom and honor God above men.
